CASE
HISTORY: Eastern Pharmaceutical Company
APPLICATION: Treatment of High-Strength
Organic and Fermentation Wastes
Challenge
A pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the US was starting up a new
fermentation process that produced a wastewater with a flow of 100,000
gallons/day with a COD of approximately 40,000 mg/L. The facility desired
to implement treatment without triggering off-site sludge disposal problems.
The facility also desired to implement treatment that prevented off-site
release of target compounds that were manufactured at the plant.
Solution
PMC BioTec performed bench work and other feasibility analyses prior to
implementing AFC treatment of target wastes.
Bottom Line
• System has been in operation over two years
• AFC system cost
was almost $7 million less than the next lowest alternative
• Off-site disposal of organic sludge has been
virtually eliminated
• There is no discharge of GMOs (genetically
modified organisms) or EDCs (endocrine disrupter compounds)
